Uganda Declared Ebola-Free, Launches National Cleaning Campaign

The World Health Organization (WHO) has officially declared Uganda free of the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD), signifying the end of the outbreak that began in September 2022. This declaration comes after 42 days passed without any new confirmed cases, fulfilling the incubation period for the virus.

The Ministry of Health, in collaboration with WHO and other partners, has been working tirelessly to contain the outbreak, which primarily affected the Mubende, Kassanda, and surrounding districts. The successful containment efforts involved rigorous contact tracing, isolation of cases, and community engagement to promote preventive measures.

Following this momentous declaration, Uganda is now shifting its focus to sustained vigilance and prevention. As part of a proactive strategy, the government, led by the Ministry of Health, has launched a national cleaning day campaign. This initiative encourages citizens across the country to participate in cleaning their homes, workplaces, and public spaces.

The aim of the cleaning drive is not only to maintain general public health and hygiene but also to reinforce awareness about disease prevention and preparedness. By fostering a culture of cleanliness, Uganda seeks to build resilience against potential future health threats, including the re-emergence of Ebola or other infectious diseases.

Health officials emphasize that while the country is declared Ebola-free, continued adherence to hygiene practices and prompt reporting of any suspected cases remain crucial. The national cleaning day serves as a powerful reminder of the collective responsibility in safeguarding public health.
