Lake Bunyonyi Safety Concerns Rise After 20 Annual Deaths

The serene waters of Lake Bunyonyi, a popular tourist destination in Uganda’s Kigezi region, have become a site of concern for local leaders and residents. Reports indicate that an average of 20 lives are lost each year in accidents on the lake, prompting urgent calls for enhanced safety measures and stricter regulations.

The primary driver behind these fatalities appears to be the use of overloaded and unseaworthy boats, often lacking essential safety equipment such as life jackets. Many of the vessels are traditional dugout canoes or small motorized boats ill-equipped to handle the lake’s conditions, especially during adverse weather.

Authorities are now advocating for mandatory safety training for boat operators and passengers. There’s also a push to enforce regulations that limit the number of passengers per boat and ensure that all individuals on board wear life jackets. The implementation of regular boat inspections is also being considered to identify and remove unsafe vessels from operation.

This initiative aims not only to protect local communities who rely on the lake for transport and livelihood but also to safeguard the growing number of tourists who visit Lake Bunyonyi.
