Oyam Drug Theft: NDA Arrests Seven Over Shs70 Million Worth of Stolen Medicines

Seven people have been arrested in Oyam District by the National Drug Authority (NDA) following allegations of stealing and illegally selling government medicines. The group, which includes health workers, a Local Council official, and security guards, is suspected of diverting medical supplies worth more than Shs70 million.
The crackdown, a result of an intelligence-led operation, focused on a local drug shop believed to be hoarding stolen public medical supplies. Authorities discovered a substantial amount of classified government medicines, clearly marked as “Government of Uganda – Not for Sale.” Among the seized items were antiretrovirals (ARVs), anti-malarials, and various other essential medications, alongside diagnostic kits and medical devices.
According to NDA spokesperson Abiaz Rwamwiri, preliminary findings suggest a systematic diversion of these essential supplies from public health facilities to the black market. He highlighted that some entrusted health professionals allegedly create artificial shortages to sell these life-saving drugs illegally. The NDA expressed serious concern over the involvement of health professionals and security personnel in this trade.
Rwamwiri also warned of the significant health risks posed by these diverted medicines. The improper handling and storage – sometimes in unsanitary conditions like dustbins or caskets – compromise their quality, safety, and effectiveness, making them dangerous for public consumption. Intelligence has also indicated that stolen drugs, particularly ARVs and anti-malarials, are being trafficked across Uganda’s borders into neighboring countries.
The seven suspects are facing charges related to illegal possession of government stores and classified drugs. This operation is part of ongoing efforts by the NDA, which has recovered over Shs15 billion in stolen government medicines and arrested more than 64 health officials nationwide in the past six years.
