Mumps and Infertility: Understanding the Link

Mumps is a well-known viral illness that typically affects children aged five to nine. It is characterized by painful swelling of the salivary glands located beneath the ears, often accompanied by a fever. While generally milder in children, the disease can present more severe complications in adolescents and adults.

In some severe cases, mumps can inflame various organs, including the brain, pancreas, and reproductive organs like the testes and ovaries. Inflammation of these reproductive organs can, in turn, lead to infertility in both men and women. However, it’s important to note that these complications are infrequent.

For males, infertility due to mumps is more likely if the infection occurs after puberty or if both testes are affected. While this can lead to a reduced sperm count or, in some instances, testicular shrinkage, permanent infertility is uncommon. Mumps itself is not a chronic condition that directly causes long-term infertility.

Preventive measures, such as vaccination and appropriate medical management of mumps, are crucial for minimizing the risk of this rare complication.
