Uganda Wildlife Education Centre Welcomes Endangered African Wild Dogs

The Uganda Wildlife Education Centre (UWEC) in Entebbe has announced the arrival of two African wild dogs, a significant development for the conservation of this critically endangered species in Uganda. The African wild dog, also known as the painted wolf, is considered locally extinct in the country, with only sporadic unconfirmed sightings reported in recent years.

The arrival of these two individuals, a male and a female, marks a hopeful step towards potentially re-establishing a wild dog population in Uganda. Their presence at UWEC will not only raise public awareness about the plight of these animals but also contribute to vital conservation research and breeding programs.

Conservationists have long expressed concern over the dwindling numbers of African wild dogs across the continent due to habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, and disease. Uganda’s last confirmed wild dog population was thought to have disappeared decades ago. The successful integration and potential breeding of these new arrivals at UWEC could pave the way for future reintroduction efforts into suitable protected areas within the country.

UWEC officials expressed their commitment to providing the best possible care for the wild dogs and emphasized the importance of this conservation milestone. This initiative underscores Uganda’s dedication to preserving its biodiversity and recovering iconic species.
