Wakiso Roads: Contractor Gets 21-Day Ultimatum to Finish Delayed Projects

Jilk Construction Company has been granted a final 21-day period to finalize two crucial road projects in Makindye-Ssabagabo Division, Wakiso District. This directive comes after an inspection revealed significant delays, with the contract nearing its 18-month expiry.

State Minister for Kampala and Metropolitan Affairs, Kabuye Kyofatogabye, issued the ultimatum during an impromptu site visit. He expressed dissatisfaction with the slow pace of work, emphasizing that the public has waited too long for these essential infrastructure improvements.

The delayed projects include the 1.8-kilometre Municipal Extension Road and the 620-metre Nakayenga Road. These are integral components of the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area Urban Development Programme (GKMA-UDP), a World Bank-funded initiative aimed at enhancing urban infrastructure.

Minister Kyofatogabye urged the contractor to bolster resources, including increasing manpower and equipment deployment, to meet the accelerated construction schedule. He stressed the importance of timely delivery for government-funded projects to ensure communities benefit from improved transport networks and services.

Residents have voiced their frustration over the protracted delays, noting the negative impact on daily movement, transport businesses, and local commerce. Upon completion, the improved roads are expected to significantly enhance connectivity within Makindye-Ssabagabo Municipality, easing traffic congestion and improving access to amenities.

Government officials have pledged continued monitoring to ensure contractors adhere to timelines and deliver value for public investment. Failure to meet the new deadline could lead to punitive measures against Jilk Construction Company.
