The map, intended to highlight countries such as Nigeria, Mozambique, Uganda, Cote d’Ivoire, Malawi, and Cameroon, failed to correctly identify any of them.
Reportedly generated with AI tools, the map misplaced coastal Nigeria as landlocked and positioned Mozambique in the Horn of Africa, far from its actual southeastern location. Cote d’Ivoire was also shown on the opposite side of the continent.
A spokesperson for the State Department described the incident as an “unfortunate error” made by a team member who quickly modified the presentation materials just before the event. The department has taken responsibility for the confusion and misrepresentation caused to attendees, particularly African partners.
