Uganda Reiterates Unwavering Support for Somalia's Peace and Stability

President Yoweri Museveni has once again pledged Uganda’s steadfast support for Somalia’s journey towards lasting peace, stability, and sustainable development. This commitment was highlighted during high-level discussions with Somalia’s President, Dr. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, held at State House, Entebbe.

The talks centered on crucial areas including regional security, the ongoing process of state-building in Somalia, governance reforms, and the reinforcement of the existing partnership between the two East African nations.

President Mohamud expressed profound gratitude for Uganda’s consistent contributions to Somalia’s peace efforts. He specifically acknowledged the presence of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) as part of regional peace support missions, alongside broader bilateral cooperation.

“We are grateful for the security support that Uganda has continued to extend to Somalia. We are in a much better position today than we were before, although challenges remain,” stated President Mohamud, underscoring the positive impact of Ugandan assistance.

Somalia’s leader also provided an update on the nation’s political reforms, emphasizing strides made towards restoring universal suffrage and direct elections after many years. These reforms aim to bolster democratic governance and ensure that Somalia’s future is shaped by its own people.

President Museveni welcomed the progress in Somalia, reaffirming Uganda’s dedication to a peaceful, unified, and prosperous nation. “For the last 19 years, we have stood with Somalia because we believe in supporting just causes and protecting innocent people. Our interest has always been to see Somalia become peaceful, stable and prosperous,” Museveni remarked.

He emphasized that enduring peace hinges on robust national institutions, unity, and inclusive governance, noting Somalia’s potential to surmount challenges through dialogue and cohesion. Drawing parallels with Uganda’s own path to stability, Museveni stressed the importance of strengthening institutions and prioritizing national unity over sectarian interests.

Both leaders committed to continued close collaboration on advancing peace, security, and regional integration, recognizing the vital role of sustained African cooperation in tackling regional security threats and fostering development across the Horn of Africa.
