Uganda Launches First Pig Iron Factory in Ntungamo

Uganda’s industrial landscape has seen a significant advancement with the commencement of operations at the nation’s very first pig iron processing plant. Located in the Rwenanura Town Council of Ntungamo District, the facility is operated by Terra Industrial Development Company.

The plant is designed to produce pig iron with an impressive 93% purity. This development aligns directly with Uganda’s national policy aimed at enhancing the value of its mineral resources through local processing, rather than exporting raw iron ore. Pig iron, a crucial intermediate product in iron manufacturing, is created by smelting iron ore and contains a high carbon content, making it essential for steel and cast iron production.

The 49-billion-shilling facility saw its construction begin in July 2025 and was successfully completed within a year. The initiative was met with government support, with President Yoweri Museveni meeting company leadership to discuss its role in boosting industrialization and value addition in the mining sector.

State Minister for Privatisation and Investment, Aminah Mukalazi, recently toured the plant to witness its progress. She was briefed by Managing Director Kong Dong Sheng and the company’s management team. The minister lauded the investment as a landmark achievement for Uganda’s industrial transformation, emphasizing its contribution to local content, technology transfer, and sustainable development.

This venture is expected to stimulate growth in Uganda’s manufacturing sector, generate employment opportunities, and strengthen local participation throughout the industrial value chain, underscoring the private sector’s vital role in economic advancement.
