Parliament Demands Answers from KCCA on Kampala Flooding

Members of Parliament are demanding urgent accountability from the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) regarding the recurrent flooding that cripples the city. The Parliamentary Committee on Government Assurances has issued a seven-day ultimatum for KCCA to present a detailed report on the causes and mitigation strategies for the ongoing deluge.

Committee Chairperson Mwine Mpaka highlighted that the inquiry was triggered by numerous public complaints and concerns over the escalating impact of floods on the daily lives of Kampala residents. The floods have not only caused significant damage to property and infrastructure but have also disrupted businesses and daily commutes, leading to substantial economic losses and posing risks to public safety.

Lawmakers expressed frustration over what they perceive as a lack of decisive action from KCCA to address the perennial problem. They are seeking clarity on the specific measures being undertaken by the city authority to manage and prevent future flooding events, which have become a common feature of Kampala’s rainy seasons. The committee expects a thorough breakdown of KCCA’s plans, including infrastructural developments, drainage system maintenance, and waste management strategies that contribute to the problem.

This parliamentary intervention underscores the seriousness of the flooding issue and the growing impatience with the current state of urban planning and management in Uganda’s capital.
