Nansana Municipality Tackles Garbage Crisis with Private Trucks

Heaps of uncollected garbage have become a common sight in Nansana Municipality, prompting the local council to hire private trucks to address the growing sanitation crisis. The accumulation of waste along roads and in residential areas has raised serious concerns about potential disease outbreaks.

Mayor John Bosco Sserunkuuma stated that the municipality was compelled to seek external help after the government failed to provide adequate garbage collection vehicles subsequent to the National Cleaning Day exercise. He emphasized that the delay in removing the collected waste posed an imminent public health risk.

“While the government declared a National Cleaning Day, it did not put in place enough garbage collection trucks to remove the waste that residents gathered,” Sserunkuuma explained. “As a municipality, we decided to hire private trucks to ensure the garbage is collected before it causes disease outbreaks.”

The mayor further urged residents to maintain their engagement in community clean-up initiatives while appealing to the central government for consistent and sufficient resources to enable local authorities to manage waste effectively.

Private trucks have already commenced operations, targeting the most affected areas. Officials expressed confidence that normal waste collection services will be re-established once the current backlog is cleared.

Thousands of Nansana residents participated in the recent National Cleaning Day, collecting substantial amounts of waste. However, the limited availability of official collection trucks led to several days of uncollected refuse, creating environmental pollution and health hazards.

This situation underscores the need for improved waste management infrastructure and resource allocation to prevent similar crises in the future.
