Nabweru Chairperson Protests Delayed Garbage Collection by Dumping Waste at Division Offices

Frustration over unaddressed waste management has led to a dramatic protest in Nabweru Division. Dorothy Nankya, the Local Council I Chairperson for Nabweru South Cell I, took matters into her own hands by transporting truckloads of garbage to the division offices.

The waste was reportedly left by residents near Nankya’s home after a recent nationwide clean-up campaign, with accumulated refuse posing a sanitation risk.

Nankya stated that her repeated appeals to division officials and health inspectors for the garbage’s removal were ignored. “I had no option but to bring it to the offices of those responsible,” she explained, highlighting the lack of response from authorities tasked with sanitation.

She accused the Nabweru Division leadership and sanitation officials of neglecting their duties in clearing garbage from public spaces, a delay that has left residents increasingly discontented.

The incident occurred in the presence of Nabweru Division Mayor Samuel Mugabi and other local leaders. While some officials attempted to intervene, Nankya was resolute, directing the truck drivers to proceed with the dumping.

Mayor Mugabi acknowledged the division’s struggle with waste collection in affected areas, stating, “We are still in the process of collecting waste from all parts of the division, and I ask residents to remain patient.” He emphasized that waste management is a government responsibility and called for more robust systems post-sanitation campaigns.

Some local leaders supported Nankya’s unconventional protest, viewing it as a necessary measure to draw attention to the escalating waste management issues and to spur a quicker response from the authorities.
