IGG Orders Immediate Suspension of Seven Parliament Officials Over Corruption Charges

The Inspector General of Government (IGG), Lady Justice Aisha Naluzze Batala, has directed the Clerk to Parliament, Adolf Mwesige, to immediately suspend seven senior officials implicated in an alleged Shs27 billion corruption scandal. This directive supersedes earlier indications that the officials might continue to receive their full salaries until the end of August before any disciplinary actions were taken.

The seven officials, including Chris Obore (Director of Communications), Daniel Adilo (Director of Human Resource), and Rajab Kaaya Ssemalulu (Principal Research Officer), are currently on remand at Luzira Prison. They face charges of embezzlement and causing financial loss, offenses stipulated under the Anti-Corruption Act.

The IGG’s decision, issued under constitutional and statutory powers, emphasizes the public interest in suspending officials from their duties while criminal proceedings are underway. The Inspectorate stated that this action is crucial for safeguarding institutional integrity and ensuring due process.

This development follows a ruling by the Anti-Corruption Court that bail applications for the accused must be heard by the High Court, due to the inclusion of money laundering charges. Prosecutors indicated that investigations are advanced and they are preparing to transfer the case to the High Court for trial.

Chris Obore has separately petitioned the High Court for bail, citing his status as a first-time offender and the sole provider for his family, whose well-being he states is jeopardized by his continued detention. The case awaits committal to the High Court for trial.
