Godfrey Achiria Assumes Command as Wamala Region's New RPC

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Godfrey Achiria has formally stepped into his new role as the Regional Police Commander (RPC) for Wamala Region. He takes over from SSP Martin Okoyo, who has been transferred to the Greater Bushenyi Policing Region.

The official handover ceremony, presided over by Commissioner of Police James Ruhweza from Police Headquarters, marked a significant leadership change for the region. The outgoing RPC, SSP Okoyo, reported that Wamala Region’s security situation remains largely stable, but acknowledged persistent crime trends requiring continued attention.

Key crime categories affecting the region include crop and livestock theft, defilement, land disputes, and violent offenses. Notably, motor vehicle theft has also emerged as a growing concern, particularly in Kassanda District.

Beyond crime trends, Wamala Police face several operational hurdles. These include a shortage of transport, particularly motorcycles at sub-county stations, and an outdated fire-fighting truck. The strategic location of Mityana Police Station and the increasing presence of foreign nationals in gold mining areas of Kassanda and Mubende districts also present unique policing challenges.

Despite these issues, local leaders, including the Resident District Commissioner for Mityana, Joseph Mukiibi, commended SSP Okoyo’s service and pledged full support to the incoming RPC, SSP Achiria. Mukiibi emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting the Uganda Police Force.

CP Ruhweza urged SSP Achiria to quickly integrate into his new role and foster strong collaborations with officers, local leaders, and the community. He reiterated the national police force’s commitment to enhancing crime prevention through technological investments, such as CCTV surveillance and specialized units, while encouraging professionalism among officers.

The leadership transition underscores the ongoing efforts by the Wamala Region police to tackle emerging security threats and bolster community partnerships in the fight against crime.
