The recent temporary shutdown of the Daily Monitor newspaper has sent ripples through the city’s informal economy, directly affecting the daily earnings of numerous individuals. Newspaper vendors, who rely on consistent sales for their income, have expressed deep concern over the disruption.

Najib Kamoga, a vendor operating in Kampala, highlighted the direct correlation between missed publication days and lost revenue. “Every missed edition translates into lost income, and for many of us, this is our sole source of livelihood,” Kamoga stated. The unpredictability of newspaper availability means vendors struggle to meet daily financial obligations, impacting their families.

Distributors also face significant challenges. The halt in Daily Monitor’s operations means a disruption in their established delivery routes and a loss of commission from sales. This not only affects their income but also puts strain on their relationships with vendors who depend on timely deliveries.
