Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga of Buganda has appealed to the Kabaka’s subjects to present gifts that not only address the Kingdom’s immediate requirements but also contribute to the preservation of Buganda’s rich history and cultural legacy.
Mayiga articulated these sentiments while accepting a range of donations from various Buganda counties and institutions at the Lubiri in Mengo. These presentations are in anticipation of the Kabaka’s upcoming 33rd coronation anniversary, with the main celebrations scheduled to take place at Watoto Church Bweyogerere.
During the gift-giving ceremony, subjects and institutions presented items such as an ambulance, maternal delivery kits, livestock including Fresian cows and goats, food supplies, and hens. The National Drug Authority (NDA) was among the contributing bodies, donating maternal delivery kits and congratulating the Kabaka on his milestone.
“When presenting gifts to the Kabaka, people should pay attention to the Kingdom’s pressing needs, especially initiatives that preserve and promote Buganda’s history and cultural heritage so that future generations can learn about them,” Mayiga emphasized. He highlighted that such gifts should extend beyond mere tradition to bolster the Kingdom’s cultural identity.
He further described the tradition of gifting the Kabaka as a vital cultural practice in Buganda, signifying respect and loyalty towards the monarch. Mayiga took the opportunity to commend the coronation anniversary organizing committee for their diligent work and expressed gratitude to all individuals, counties, and institutions for their generous contributions in honour of His Majesty.
