Buganda Kingdom Celebrates Kabaka Mutebi's 33rd Coronation Anniversary

Buganda Kingdom recently celebrated a significant milestone: the 33rd anniversary of Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II’s coronation. The Kingdom organized a special thanksgiving service held at the popular Watoto Church, which drew a large and diverse congregation.

Attendees included prominent figures such as the Nnabagereka Sylivia Nagginda, esteemed princes and princesses, clan leaders, various religious dignitaries, Buganda Kingdom ministers, and central government officials. The Leader of the Opposition, Joel Ssenyonyi, former Katikkiros, and numerous schoolchildren also joined in the festivities.

During the service, Watoto Church Lead Pastor Julius Rwothomio led prayers, expressing gratitude for the Kabaka’s reign and wishing him continued good health. Pastor Gary Skinner, the founder of Watoto Church, delivered a recorded message congratulating the Kabaka and expressing thanks for the opportunity to host the event, emphasizing the Kabaka’s role in fostering peace and compassion.

Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga, in his address, reflected on the Kabaka’s coronation in 1993 and acknowledged the government’s efforts in restoring the Kingdom and returning some of its properties, while also noting ongoing discussions regarding remaining assets.

Mayiga urged the Baganda people to embrace the theme “Be Courageous in Preserving Our Culture,” stressing the importance of safeguarding cultural heritage as a foundation for development, drawing parallels with societies that have successfully maintained traditions amidst modernization.

Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja represented President Yoweri Museveni, who extended his congratulations to Kabaka Mutebi. In his message, President Museveni reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening its relationship with Buganda Kingdom for national development and lauded the Kabaka’s contributions to health, education, and community initiatives. The President also announced a contribution of Shs 40 million towards the anniversary celebrations, while Watoto Church donated Shs 38 million to Kkamazzi Hospital.

The anniversary celebration concluded with the ceremonial cutting and sharing of a cake among the guests and worshippers.
