Buganda Celebrates 31st Anniversary of Kabaka Mutebi II's Coronation

On this day, July 31st, Buganda commemorates the historic coronation of its 36th King, Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II. The ceremony, held at Naggalabi Hill in 1993, marked the restoration of the Buganda monarchy after a 27-year hiatus.

This significant event followed the Ugandan government’s decision earlier that month to reinstate traditional and cultural institutions. The monarchy had been abolished following a political crisis in 1966, which led to the exile of the previous Kabaka, Edward Muteesa II. He died in the UK in 1969, leaving his son, Prince Mutebi, as heir apparent for nearly three decades.

The coronation was steeped in tradition, with clan elders presiding over ancient rituals. The resonant beat of the royal drums, Mujaguzo, sounded for the first time in decades, announcing the return of the Kabaka.

The celebrations blended cultural heritage with a Christian blessing, reflecting the kingdom’s dual identity. Hundreds of thousands gathered to witness the historic occasion, turning the event into a vibrant celebration of Buganda’s cultural resurgence.

Since assuming the throne, Kabaka Mutebi II has been a proponent of initiatives focused on education, public health, youth empowerment, and economic development, continuing the legacy of his kingdom.
