Parliament Approves Juma Witonze as State Minister for Internal Affairs

The Parliamentary Appointments Committee has given the green light for Juma Witonze Kisekka to serve as the State Minister for Internal Affairs. This approval follows the committee’s decision not to endorse Dr. Lawrence Muganga for the same position.

Chaired by Speaker Jacob Oboth-Oboth and his deputy Thomas Tayebwa, the committee met in a closed session on Thursday.

Appearing before the committee members, Witonze outlined his immediate priorities, emphasizing a strong commitment to combating corruption within all departments of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. He expressed gratitude to President Museveni and Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba for the nomination.

“My immediate focus will be to fight corruption in all departments under this ministry, in line with the directives that the President has issued,” Witonze stated.

Regarding sensitive issues such as allegations of torture and recent abductions, Witonze indicated a plan to thoroughly investigate these matters once in office before taking any decisive actions. “I will study these matters thoroughly once I am in office so that I can respond appropriately and in accordance with the law,” he assured.

Several committee members reportedly welcomed Witonze’s nomination, describing him as a dedicated and capable leader. One MP noted his potential to significantly improve service delivery and rebuild public confidence in the ministry.

Witonze, who is currently the Chairperson of Youth in Gomba District and recently contested in the EALA elections on the NRM ticket, awaits his official swearing-in ceremony.
