IGG Vows to Champion More Resources for Mulago City Mortuary

The Deputy Inspector General of Government, Anne Twinomugisha Muhairwe, has thrown her support behind calls for enhanced resources at the Mulago National Referral Hospital’s City Mortuary. During a recent site visit, Muhairwe acknowledged the facility’s expanding responsibilities and pledged to raise the urgent need for more funding and personnel with relevant government bodies.

Hospital officials informed Muhairwe that the mortuary is increasingly crucial for both forensic investigations and as a vital training hub for pathology students. Senior Consultant Paediatric Surgeon Dr. John Sekabira noted that this dual role significantly increases the workload, placing considerable pressure on the current staff.

Despite the challenges, Director of Police Health Services and Lead Forensic Pathologist, AIGP Dr. Moses Byaruhanga, commended recent government investments that have improved the speed and accuracy of postmortem reports. However, he stressed that operational hurdles persist and outlined plans for an additional mortuary facility and recruitment of more medical staff to alleviate the strain.

Muhairwe’s inspection revealed a facility that, while managing a high volume of cases, was found to be clean, orderly, and professionally run. She lauded the staff for their dedication, acknowledging the often thankless nature of their work and expressing appreciation for their commitment.

The IGG assured the mortuary’s administration and staff that their concerns regarding staffing and funding would be escalated. This commitment underscores the Inspectorate of Government’s dedication to improving public service delivery across the nation.
