Government Invests Shs4.9 Billion in Upgrading Health Training Institutions

Construction work has officially commenced at three vital health training centers as part of a major government initiative to improve educational infrastructure. The project, launched at the Hoima School of Nursing and Midwifery, will also see significant upgrades at the Jinja School of Nursing and Midwifery and the Fort Portal College of Health Sciences.
Funded through a partnership between the Government of Uganda and Enabel, the project is slated for completion within a 12-month timeframe. This investment is expected to substantially enhance the facilities available for students and educators in the health sector.
Specific improvements at the Hoima School of Nursing and Midwifery include the addition of a skills laboratory, simulation rooms, an expanded library, ICT facilities, and updated storage and preparation areas. Meanwhile, the Jinja School of Nursing and Midwifery will gain new lecture rooms, simulation facilities, offices, and storage. The Fort Portal College of Health Sciences is set to benefit from new skills labs, lecture halls, offices, and simulation rooms, among other essential facilities.
Several construction firms have been contracted for the various sites: King Albert Construction Limited will handle works in Hoima, ESBRO Construction Limited in Fort Portal, and ROHI Services Limited in Jinja. Officials emphasized the importance of timely completion and quality, citing the Hoima City Stadium project as an example of efficient delivery.
The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education and Sports, Dr. Kedrace Turyagyenda, highlighted that the upgrades are crucial for creating safer and more supportive learning environments. She added that this investment will strengthen the institutions’ capacity to produce highly competent health professionals equipped to serve the nation effectively. Representatives from Enabel and the Ministry of Education and Sports both underscored the project’s alignment with national goals for health workforce development and commended the commitment to training dedicated and compassionate healthcare providers.
