FIFA Launches Disciplinary Action Against Argentina for Post-World Cup Final Conduct

FIFA has officially opened disciplinary proceedings against Argentina concerning their conduct both during and immediately after the World Cup final match where they were defeated by Spain.

The world football authority has appointed a disciplinary and ethics prosecutor to review the events that transpired after the final whistle at the New York New Jersey Stadium. This followed multiple altercations involving Argentinian players and staff with their Spanish counterparts after the 1-0 loss.

Specifically, players Nahuel Molina and Leandro Paredes, along with assistant coach Roberto Ayala, are being investigated for alleged assault. Molina also faces scrutiny for unsporting behavior. Teammate Thiago Almada and Spain’s Gavi are implicated in similar allegations of unsporting conduct.

Under FIFA’s disciplinary code, unsportsmanlike conduct can lead to a minimum one-match suspension, while assault carries a minimum of a three-match ban.

The Argentinian Football Association itself is under investigation for potential breaches across several matches. These include using a sporting event for political demonstrations, team misconduct, discrimination, racist abuse, and violations of match order and security regulations. The latter points to discriminatory chants, late kick-offs, and spectators throwing objects.

Argentina’s actions have drawn attention before, notably their semi-final victory celebration over England, where players displayed a banner asserting Argentina’s claim to the Falkland Islands, stating “Las Malvinas son Argentinas.”
