UBOS Staff Trained in Leadership, Urged to Prioritize Data Accuracy for National Planning

Forty-eight staff members from the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) have undergone a month-long leadership and patriotism training at the National Leadership Institute (NALI) in Kyankwanzi. The program aimed to enhance their capacity to collect and manage data crucial for Uganda’s development.

During the passing-out ceremony, NALI Director Col. Okei Rukogota stressed that accurate and reliable statistics are the bedrock of effective national planning and program implementation. He stated that flawed data negatively impacts the design of development initiatives, ultimately affecting citizens.

“Data is the heartbeat of any sovereign nation’s strategic development,” Col. Rukogota remarked. “When statistics are flawed or disjointed, it is the common citizen who suffers the most because policies fail to address the specific realities on the ground.”

He urged the newly trained UBOS staff to see themselves as the primary architects of the nation’s records, emphasizing accuracy as their core mandate. Col. Rukogota encouraged them to move beyond their offices and engage directly with communities to better understand citizen challenges and apply their analytical skills to find sustainable solutions.

UBOS Deputy Executive Director Dr. Fred Ssennonno commended the training, urging the staff to integrate the acquired skills into their daily work. He highlighted that the training represents a public investment in ensuring world-class service delivery. The staff were challenged to remain adaptable and committed to UBOS’s mandate.

The training covered drills, physical conditioning, civic education, and leadership development. The participants took oaths to uphold the bureau’s standards and serve the country with integrity, receiving certificates as a recognition of their enhanced professional capabilities. This initiative is part of UBOS’s broader strategy to strengthen its human resource capacity to support the nation’s upcoming development programs.
