PLU Women's Leader Joins NUP Supporters in Mubende Election Dispute

Joan Komugisha, the PLU Greater Mubende Women’s League leader, has aligned herself with National Unity Platform (NUP) supporters who are demanding the Electoral Commission (EC) declare winners in suspended LC1 elections. Protesters from Katabalanga and Kibaati villages gathered at the EC offices in Mubende, accusing the commission of delaying election results.

Komugisha stated that her involvement stems from a commitment to democratic principles and ensuring voter intentions are respected. “The people exercised their constitutional right to vote peacefully, and their decision must be respected,” she asserted, adding that the PLU supports fairness and transparency in all electoral processes.

She urged President Yoweri Museveni to intervene and ensure justice prevails in the matter. Komugisha expressed confidence that the NRM chairperson incumbent in Katabalanga Village would not retain the position, as the voters had supposedly rejected the current leadership.

Supporters of NUP and claimed victors, John Massajjage (Katabalanga) and Jude Baleke Kezaala (Kibaati), reiterated their calls for the EC to announce the genuine results, emphasizing that residents voted for change. They warned of further demonstrations if the EC fails to act.

Conversely, Mubende NRM spokesperson Twaha Mukomazi defended the election process, dismissing the protesters’ allegations and urging calm. He maintained that the NRM remains the dominant choice in Mubende and that the EC should be allowed to complete its work lawfully.

Efforts to reach the Electoral Commission’s Returning Officer in Mubende for a comment were unsuccessful. Official EC figures indicate that voting proceeded smoothly in 15 villages, with the NRM securing a significant majority of chairperson positions.
