Museveni Endorses HUVET Bio-Science Park for Uganda's Vaccine Independence

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has welcomed the proposed HUVET Bio-Science Park, hailing it as a significant stride towards Uganda’s self-sufficiency in vaccine production and its aspiration to become a frontrunner in biotechnology.
During a meeting at State House, Entebbe, with a delegation of engineers and doctors led by Eng. Hashem Azimi, the President conveyed his enthusiasm. “I am very happy to receive this wonderful group of investors from Iran. I welcome you, and I will support you,” he stated.
The HUVET Bio-Science Park is designed to bolster Uganda’s capacity in local vaccine manufacturing, veterinary biotechnology, and scientific innovation. This initiative aims to decrease the nation’s reliance on imported vaccines and biological products.
Eng. Azimi shared a long-standing connection with the President, dating back to a 2008 OIC Summit in Kampala. He recalled President Museveni’s inquiry about his company’s manufacturing ambitions and pledged to fulfill that vision. “Your Excellency, today, 18 years later, I stand before you to fulfill that promise,” Azimi remarked, emphasizing that the project represents a matured vision built on years of experience and collaboration.
Having spent nearly two decades in Uganda, Azimi noted the country’s economic progress under Museveni’s leadership, but also observed the economic strain from livestock diseases and the dependence on imported medical supplies. This led his team to focus on what they could contribute to Uganda, resulting in the HUVET Bio-Science Park concept.
“Our vision goes beyond manufacturing vaccines. We seek to establish East Africa’s first fully integrated biotechnology hub dedicated to animal health, food security, epidemic preparedness, biotechnology research and high-value exports,” Eng. Azimi explained. The project has secured land in Mpigi District, positioning Uganda as a regional center of excellence for veterinary biotechnology.
The meeting was attended by the Minister of State for Animal Industry, Hon. Bright Rwamirama, and other key project professionals.
