Museveni Directs Official Burial for Former Bundibugyo MP William Sekyewunda

President Yoweri Museveni has directed that Dr. William Muguruka Sekyewunda, who represented Bundibugyo District in the 4th Parliament (1980-1985), be accorded an official burial following his passing. The announcement was made by Minister for the Presidency, Milly Babirye Babalanda, who highlighted Sekyewunda’s significant contributions to Uganda.

Babalanda, who also chairs the funeral organizing committee, expressed the government’s profound sorrow at Sekyewunda’s death. She described him as a dedicated leader who served the nation across multiple critical sectors, including medicine, politics, education, and community development. His passing at the age of 77 is recognized as a substantial loss to the country.

Dr. Sekyewunda, born in 1949, was a trained medical doctor who graduated from Makerere University in 1976. He further enhanced his expertise by obtaining a Master’s Degree in Public Health from Cardiff University in 2011. His career spanned significant roles, starting at Kilembe Hospital, before he entered public service as a Member of Parliament.

Beyond his parliamentary tenure, Sekyewunda continued to serve the public. He worked at the Mulago Hospital Cancer Institute and also contributed to academia as a lecturer at Kampala International University’s Dar es Salaam campus from 2013 to 2017. His commitment extended to local governance and community life, where he served on the Bundibugyo District Service Commission and held leadership positions in the Catholic Church.

The government acknowledged Sekyewunda’s “strong values of integrity, patriotism and dedication.” A joint committee of government officials and family representatives has been formed to manage the official burial proceedings, scheduled to take place in Bundibugyo District from July 29th to July 31st, 2026.
