Kizza Besigye Collapses in Court Amidst Treason Trial Protest

High Court proceedings in the treason case against veteran opposition politician Kizza Besigye were brought to an abrupt halt on Wednesday when the accused collapsed in the dock. The collapse followed a sustained protest by Besigye, who insisted that the trial could not proceed without his consent to state-appointed lawyers.

For over ten minutes, Besigye vociferously objected to the commencement of his trial, citing a violation of his constitutional right to choose his own legal representation. He informed the court that his personal legal team had withdrawn due to concerns for their safety and alleged intimidation.

Despite Besigye’s protests and the recent withdrawal of his counsel, Justice Emmanuel Baguma ruled that Besigye had been afforded sufficient time to consult with the state-appointed lawyers. The judge indicated that the trial would proceed, even as a separate application challenging the legal representation arrangement was still pending.

The prosecution had just begun presenting its first witness, Andy Wilson Orlando, a British-American national, when the dramatic turn of events unfolded. Besigye’s collapse shocked those present in the courtroom, including court officials, prison officers, and members of the public.

Attempts by Besigye’s personal doctors to provide immediate medical attention were initially blocked by prison officers, leading to a brief standoff before court officials intervened. Two ambulances arrived at the High Court premises, and Besigye was subsequently taken away for medical evaluation.

The case has seen Besigye largely representing himself since his initial legal team withdrew, citing a hostile environment. Co-accused Capt. Denis Oola has accepted the state-appointed lawyers, but Besigye and Obeid Lutale maintain they are still considering a larger pool of legal professionals for their defence.

The trial, which has faced restrictions on media coverage, is expected to resume once the court receives an update on Dr. Besigye’s condition.
