Fifa Offers $40 Million to Nations Backing Controversial Commercial Plan

Fifa President Gianni Infantino has presented a new, controversial plan to all 211 member associations, outlining the sale of stakes in the organization’s premier competitions. According to a letter obtained by the BBC, national football federations stand to receive $40 million (approximately 148 billion Ugandan Shillings) if they endorse Infantino’s proposal.

The plan involves creating a commercial subsidiary to manage major events like the World Cup, allowing external investors to acquire stakes in this entity. Fifa has indicated that this move aims to maximize commercial revenue, projecting potential earnings of $10 billion.

Member associations have been given a deadline of September 19 to signal their support. Those that commit positively by this date will receive an initial $20 million, accessible from January 1, 2027. Fifa confirmed this funding would come from “liquidating a minority portion” of its stake in Fifa Forward Enterprise, a subsidiary established for commercial growth.

However, the proposal has been met with significant opposition and condemnation, particularly from European football governing body UEFA. Many express concerns over the lack of transparency and due process in developing and presenting the plan. Some individuals present at a recent Fifa council meeting claim Infantino’s earlier presentation was merely an “aspirational vision” and not a finalized proposal, leaving them feeling “duped.”

UEFA has declared the plan “crossed a line” and is convening an emergency meeting with its 55 member nations to devise a strategy. The strong opposition highlights concerns about potential boycotts and the impact on the global football calendar, especially with ongoing discussions about expanding the World Cup format. Some sources within the English football scene have compared the threat posed by this Fifa initiative to the controversy surrounding the proposed European Super League in 2021.
