Col. Nakalema Hails Agro-Processing Investors for Boosting Uganda's Industrial Growth

Col. Edith Nakalema, head of the State House Investors Protection Unit (SHIPU), has commended Avani Global Agri and Avani Smarts Farm for their substantial investment, which is seen as a major catalyst for Uganda’s industrial future. During a meeting with company directors, Col. Nakalema highlighted their role in advancing the country’s industrialization, value addition, and overall economic transformation.
She praised the investors for their confidence in Uganda’s investment climate, noting their initial US$5 million investment as a strong endorsement of the nation’s potential. The company’s focus on agro-processing, particularly in turmeric and rosemary cultivation for wellness and medicinal products, directly aligns with the government’s strategic vision of moving beyond raw agricultural exports to producing high-value manufactured goods.
Col. Nakalema welcomed Avani’s plans to venture into electric mobility, recognizing its potential to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and enhance environmental sustainability. SHIPU reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding investor interests by streamlining bureaucratic processes and ensuring efficient coordination among government bodies.
Avani Smarts Farm Director, Dr. Siva Mahesh, shared the company’s ambition to establish Uganda as a global hub for extracting life sciences molecules from agricultural products. With over 700 acres already under cultivation in Nwoya District, plans are in motion to expand significantly and establish a world-class extraction facility in Kampala.
Additionally, Avani intends to accelerate Uganda’s transition to electric mobility by converting existing motorcycles into electric bikes, aiming to make this technology accessible to a wider population. Officials from the Ministries of Works and Transport, Agriculture, and Science, Technology, and Innovation, along with the Uganda Free Zones and Export Promotions Authority, were present, underscoring the multi-sectoral importance of this investment.
