Authorities in Busia district, eastern Uganda, are probing the tragic deaths of a married couple, Godfrey Okuku, 31, and Racheal Auma, 23, discovered in their Namamera village home on July 28, 2026. Residents found Auma deceased in the bedroom, while Okuku was found hanged within the house.
Initial police reports suggest the incident may be a murder-suicide, potentially stemming from a domestic dispute, though a definitive motive has not yet been determined. The local LCI chairperson reported the incident to the Busime Police Post, prompting an investigation by the Police Investigations Unit.
A case of suspected murder and suicide has been formally opened. Investigators have secured several items from the scene, including an axe, a knife with potential bloodstains, surgical blades, and damaged household electronics, which are considered crucial evidence.
Bukedi South regional police spokesperson Moses Johnson Mugwe indicated that the evidence points towards a violent confrontation. It is believed Okuku may have killed Auma before taking his own life. The bodies have been transferred to Masafu General Hospital for postmortem examinations.
The community has expressed shock at the event, with some residents stating that the couple had not shown overt signs of significant marital conflict. Neighbors had anticipated seeing the couple participate in local elections, making the discovery of their deaths particularly startling.
