Award-winning Kenyan musician Bien has ignited a discussion within the East African music scene by critiquing Uganda’s industry structure. He contends that the current model, which enables artists to achieve substantial local fame and financial gain from just one popular song, might be diminishing the drive for broader regional and global recognition.
“In Uganda, one hit song can take an artist around the whole country. You have to be there to understand how that system works,” Bien stated during a recent podcast appearance. He contrasted this with Kenya, where artists, after exhausting performance opportunities in major cities like Nairobi, Mombasa, and Kisumu, are compelled to seek audiences in neighboring countries at an earlier stage in their careers.
Bien suggests that while this Ugandan system offers considerable financial comfort to local artists, it could simultaneously dampen their ambition to break into wider African and international markets. He also posited that this comfort might be contributing to a perceived creative stagnation, as the security of a dedicated local fanbase could reduce the impetus for musical innovation and the creation of sounds with wider international appeal.
His comments have circulated widely on social media, eliciting mixed reactions. Some Ugandan observers echo Bien’s sentiment, believing the industry is overly reliant on local success. However, others defend the existing model, highlighting that it provides a viable income stream for artists in a market where international touring opportunities are not always readily available.
