US Walks Out of UN Security Council in Protest Over French Remarks

Tensions flared at the United Nations Security Council this week as the US delegation dramatically exited a session during remarks by France. This walkout was a direct response to comments from the French UN mission that likened Washington’s voting patterns on human rights issues to those of authoritarian regimes like North Korea and Russia.

The dispute originated last Friday when the US, alongside North Korea and Russia, voted against extending the term of Volker Turk as the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. Following this vote, France’s UN mission publicly criticized the US, stating on X, “The US used to be a beacon of human rights. Not anymore.”

US ambassador Dan Negrea stated that the delegation would continue such protests until France “renounces their condescending and disrespectful rhetoric.” He argued that France supported a human rights chief who “lectured” democratic nations while “cozying up to the world’s worst oppressors.” Turk, the High Commissioner, has previously issued critical statements regarding Russia’s actions in Ukraine and Israel’s military operations in Gaza.

The walkout occurred during an emergency Security Council meeting focused on Russia’s war in Ukraine, while France’s ambassador, Jerome Bonnafont, was speaking. Bonnafont had defended Turk, calling him a “voice of conscience” who showed “rigor and impartiality” during his first term.

The controversy over Turk’s reappointment, which ultimately passed with significant support, highlights ongoing friction between the US and the UN. This incident follows a pattern of strain, notably during the Trump administration, which saw reduced funding and withdrawal from several UN bodies. Previously, US Ambassador Jeff Bartos had warned of “consequences” for the assembly tolerating “procedural overreach, backroom deals, and the misuse of UN posts,” and pledged to “immediately reassess our engagement, participation, and funding.”

The UN, through Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq, declined to comment on the specific walkout, but emphasized that all member states are expected to adhere to decisions made within the council.
