PLU Bans Military Attire, Tightens Grip on Communications and Activities

The Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) has rolled out new administrative measures aimed at fostering discipline and safeguarding its public image. A key directive prohibits members from wearing military or paramilitary-style attire at PLU offices, meetings, and official functions.

Under these new protocols, enforced by an internal memorandum from the PLU Office of Protocol, any individual attending PLU events or accessing its premises must adhere to a dress code that avoids combat gear, tactical clothing, or any apparel that resembles military or security force uniforms, unless explicit written authorization is granted.

Instead, members are encouraged to opt for decent civilian clothing or attire officially branded by PLU. This initiative is part of a broader effort to cultivate a “disciplined, law-abiding and credible organisation,” according to the PLU.

Beyond dress code, PLU is tightening its communication channels. Members are now directed to exclusively use official PLU platforms and communicate through the Office of the General Secretary or authorized Central Committee members for information regarding the organization’s programs, appointments, and other activities. The circulation of information from unofficial sources is strongly discouraged.

The organisation also announced a zero-tolerance policy for personal attacks, verbal abuse, threats, and online harassment. Disputes and differences of opinion are to be resolved through established internal structures and submitted to the Secretariat.

Furthermore, PLU is mandating the registration of all supporter-led digital platforms, including WhatsApp groups and social media pages, used for mobilization. Administrators must submit details such as platform names, links, administrator contacts, and operational areas. Unauthorized use of PLU’s name, logo, or branding on social media is strictly forbidden.

Any activities, including fundraising or mobilization events, organized in the name of PLU require prior clearance from the Office of the General Secretary. The directives also warn against engaging in criminal conduct, violence, extortion, or spreading misinformation, all of which could damage the organisation’s reputation.

These directives reaffirm PLU’s commitment to patriotism, discipline, integrity, and respect for the rule of law, emphasizing unity and internal dispute resolution through its leadership structures.
