Nation Media Group Uganda Set to Resume Operations After Presidential Approval

Nation Media Group’s operations in Uganda are set to resume following a significant authorization from President Yoweri Museveni. The media conglomerate, which includes prominent outlets like Daily Monitor, NTV Uganda, Spark TV, KFM, and Dembe FM, has been off air for over a month.

This reopening comes after a series of high-level discussions between NMG’s leadership, government officials, and the President. Joe Ageyo, NMG Editor-in-Chief, played a key role in the negotiations, remaining in Kampala during the shutdown period to address concerns with government representatives.

The final stages of the talks involved NMG Chairman Joe Muganda, CEO Geoffrey Odundo, and other senior executives meeting with the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) Executive Director, Nyombi Thembo, to finalize outstanding issues.

In a statement, NMG Chairman Joe Muganda expressed his welcome for the opportunity to re-engage with the Ugandan market. “Our immediate priority will be to restore our platforms responsibly, strengthen local content and provide Ugandans with credible, relevant and innovative journalism across print, broadcast and digital channels,” Muganda stated.

Taifa Group, NMG’s majority shareholder, confirmed the President’s approval, with Chairman Rostam Aziz extending gratitude to President Museveni and Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba for their role in facilitating the resolution. Aziz reiterated the group’s commitment to Uganda’s socio-economic development and upholding fair, balanced, and independent journalism.

The shutdown, which began on June 28th, involved security forces surrounding NMG’s facilities. Government officials had reportedly raised concerns regarding editorial content and demanded improvements in professionalism. Discussions, including those with Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, are understood to have focused on editorial direction and the necessity of hiring experienced editors and journalists committed to objective reporting.

As NMG platforms return, the company emphasizes its ongoing dedication to editorial independence, integrity, and professionalism, leveraging its regional capabilities to support a resilient media industry in Uganda.
