Veteran singer Mesach Semakula has issued a call to action for Uganda’s current music scene, imploring artists to shift their focus from prolific output to the creation of enduring, quality music.
Semakula, a celebrated figure in the Ugandan music industry, believes that the longevity of well-crafted songs is undeniable. He pointed to the recent phenomenon of classic Ugandan tracks experiencing a revival on social media platforms like TikTok as a testament to this. These resurfaced hits, originally released years ago, are being embraced by new generations, proving that good music transcends fleeting trends.
“Only the good ones come back—not all of them,” Semakula stated in a recent media interaction. He emphasized that musicians who invested in creating meaningful songs with lasting appeal are the ones who continue to resonate with audiences, enjoying sustained relevance rather than chasing temporary fame.
He further elaborated that TikTok has become an unexpected yet powerful conduit for exposing older music to younger demographics. This allows timeless anthems, including those by the late Paul Job Kafeero, Radio, Jose Chameleone, and Bobi Wine, to find a new audience and enjoy a second wave of popularity.
Semakula encouraged artists to view their work as long-term investments, advising them to dedicate resources to superior songwriting, production, and impactful messaging. He argued that music with substance will not only stand the test of time but will also continue to generate value for the artist for years to come.
This advice comes from a place of experience, highlighting a successful strategy for artistic legacy in Uganda’s vibrant music landscape. For more details, refer to Howwe Entertainment.
