Mbarara City Halts LC1 Elections in Five Cells Due to Political Interference and Violence

Electoral officials in Mbarara City have been forced to suspend Local Council One (LC1) elections in five specific cells following significant outbreaks of violence and allegations of undue political influence. The affected areas include Kakiika, Mandela, Nyakaizi, Rwenkanja, and Karugangama cells.

Mbarara City Returning Officer Violet Atuhura confirmed the cancellations, citing the impossibility of conducting a free, fair, and credible election under the prevailing tense conditions. The presence of high-ranking politicians, including Members of Parliament and city councillors, at polling stations reportedly fueled divisions and escalated tensions among voters and officials.

“We cannot allow an exercise meant for grassroots leadership to be hijacked by violence and undue influence from higher-level politicians,” Atuhura stated, emphasizing that the safety of voters and election personnel, along with the integrity of the ballot, were paramount.

The unrest was particularly severe in Karugangama Cell, where rival political groups clashed, leading security personnel to deploy teargas and fire warning shots to disperse the crowds and restore order. This disruption threatened election officials and halted the voting process.

Atuhura assured residents that fresh elections would be scheduled once security arrangements are reinforced and guidance is received from higher authorities. Investigations into the violence and political interference are underway, with assurances that those responsible will be held accountable. Despite these incidents, LC1 elections proceeded with high voter turnout in other parts of the city, with 51 chairperson positions filled unopposed.
