Liberty Motors Director Arrested and Remanded Over Fatal School Bus Crash

Muhangi Shadaya, a director at Liberty Motors Uganda Limited, has been charged and remanded in connection with the devastating bus crash that claimed the lives of 24 pupils from King David Junior School. The incident occurred as the students were traveling, leading to a significant loss of life.

Shadaya appeared before the Kapchorwa Chief Magistrate’s Court, facing three charges under the Traffic and Road Safety Act. According to police, these charges include permitting an unlicensed individual to drive, allowing a passenger vehicle to operate without the necessary permits, and using a mechanically unsound vehicle on public roads.

Investigators have revealed that the driver of the ill-fated bus was allegedly operating it using his brother’s driving permit, indicating a serious breach of traffic regulations. Shadaya pleaded not guilty to all charges and has been remanded until August 13, 2026.

Local authorities, including the Kapchorwa Resident District Commissioner Stanley Bayole, commended the police for their diligent pursuit of the case. The commissioner also noted that several traffic officers on duty at the time of the accident have been arrested for alleged negligence.

The Director of Public Prosecutions has sanctioned the case file, and it is now awaiting formal prosecution. The RDC extended gratitude to the Kapchorwa community for their humanitarian aid to the victims and their families.

Authorities are urging all motorists, particularly those traveling in the challenging mountainous terrain of the Sebei sub-region, to strictly adhere to all traffic laws and exercise heightened caution to prevent future tragedies.

The accident remains one of the most fatal school transport incidents in Uganda in recent history.
