Kamwenge Residents Vote in Large Numbers for Long-Awaited LC1 Elections

Residents across Kamwenge District enthusiastically participated in recent elections to choose Local Council One (LC1) chairpersons, ending a protracted period of more than eight years without village council leadership.

The high voter turnout signals a strong community desire for effective local governance. Many citizens interviewed by Nile Post expressed their determination to elect leaders committed to transparency, combating corruption, and actively mobilizing communities to access and benefit from government development programs.

At Rukunyu Primary School’s polling station, approximately 400 residents cast their ballots in a peaceful and orderly process. Electoral officials and security personnel oversaw the exercise, ensuring its integrity. Ford Muhumuza, the Election Presiding Officer, confirmed the transparency of the proceedings, noting that vote counting was conducted openly with all candidates and their agents present.

“The voting exercise was peaceful and transparent. Every valid vote was counted openly in the presence of candidates, their agents, and members of the public. The results reflect the will of the voters, and Esau Muhwezi has been duly declared the winner,” stated Muhumuza.

Residents like Sarah Katushabe of Rukunyu Village emphasized the importance of these elections. “We have waited for these elections for many years. We wanted leaders who are honest, accountable, and ready to mobilize communities to benefit from government programmes. That is why so many people turned up to vote,” she commented.

Similarly, in Bukonderwa Village, Kamwenge Town Council, over 226 voters participated, reflecting the widespread eagerness to re-engage in grassroots democracy. The newly elected leaders are expected to focus on enhancing accountability, addressing local challenges, and serving as a crucial link between communities and government initiatives designed to improve livelihoods.
