Chaos Halts Ibanda LC1 Elections, Voting Postponed

Voting in Bihembe Cell, Keihangara Sub-county, Ibanda District, came to an abrupt halt on Tuesday when significant disorder erupted at the polling station. The disruption began as voters clashed over disagreements concerning the numbering and order of individuals in the queue, leading to confusion and an inability to proceed with the electoral process.

Ibanda Resident District Commissioner, Godfrey Mbetegyereize, confirmed the postponement, stating that the Electoral Commission made the decision after it became clear that a peaceful and credible election could not be conducted under the prevailing circumstances. The aim is to uphold the integrity of the election and ensure a calm environment for future voting.

Mbetegyereize commended the swift and professional response of the security personnel present, who successfully de-escalated the situation and prevented it from devolving into violence. He urged residents to remain patient and peaceful while awaiting further communication from the Electoral Commission regarding a new polling date.

Residents who had gathered to cast their ballots expressed frustration over the suspension but also voiced their desire for a prompt rescheduling of the election. They emphasized the importance of exercising their democratic rights in a tension-free atmosphere. The Electoral Commission is expected to announce a revised date for the election once conditions are deemed suitable for a secure and orderly process.
