A crucial site inspection has taken place at the Tororo Service Uganda Centre, signalling a significant step towards its full operationalization. Officials from the Ministry of ICT and National Guidance, alongside key agencies like the National Information Technology Authority-Uganda (NITA-U) and the Ministry of Public Service, reviewed the progress of renovations.

Local leaders, including Tororo Municipality’s Deputy Mayor Beatrice Achola and Deputy Resident District Commissioner Fahira Mpalanyi, were present for the assessment. The inspection focused on ensuring all renovation works are finalized and the centre is equipped to provide its intended services.

The Tororo facility is part of a nationwide initiative to establish 19 One-Stop Service Centres. These centres aim to consolidate various government services, such as national ID processing, tax registration, business permits, passport applications, and driving license renewals, into a single, accessible location. This model is a core component of the government’s strategy to improve public service delivery by making it more citizen-centric.

NITA-U is actively supporting this rollout, particularly through the Uganda Digital Acceleration Project, by aiding in the renovation of pilot centres in Tororo, Mbarara, and Gulu. The Ministry of ICTPS Permanent Secretary, Dr. Aminah Zawedde, expressed satisfaction with the centre’s design, noting its emphasis on accessibility and user convenience. She highlighted that robust internet connectivity, facilitated by NITA-U’s National Backbone Infrastructure, will be vital for the centres’ efficiency.

Dr. Hatwib Mugasa, Executive Director of NITA-U, emphasized that the completed centre will be a modern hub offering digital services that can foster job creation for the youth, expedite grievance redressal, and serve as a center for local innovation. The Ministry of Public Service’s Permanent Secretary, Catherine Bitarakwate Musingwiire, stressed the urgency for the centre to open, stating that the citizens of Tororo have waited a long time for such a facility. Posta Uganda, a key partner, also reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing service delivery through these consolidated centres.

This development in Tororo is part of a larger government effort to move away from a fragmented service delivery system towards a more streamlined and modern approach, with six pilot centres already operational across the country.
