During the annual Malaria Walk on Sunday, July 26, 2026, Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa emphasized the critical need for preventative measures against malaria, particularly within educational institutions.

He urged for the establishment of minimal testing laboratories in school sickbays and dispensaries. Tayebwa highlighted that these facilities would act as an initial point of detection for malaria, a move he believes will be instrumental in preventing recent tragic deaths observed in schools.

The Deputy Speaker reiterated Parliament’s dedication to combating malaria through sustained budgetary allocations and robust advocacy. He expressed optimism about the positive impact of these efforts, noting contributions to increased funding for healthcare personnel recruitment, thereby enhancing the nation’s capacity to manage and prevent diseases.

Tayebwa portrayed the Malaria Walk as a crucial call to action, stressing that ending malaria is a collective responsibility for all Ugandans. He poignanty remarked that malaria continues to claim lives, disproportionately affecting young children and pregnant women, and imposing a significant strain on families and the national health system.

Leading participants including Members of Parliament, civil society representatives, diplomats, and students, Tayebwa acknowledged warnings from scientists about climate change potentially complicating the malaria fight, necessitating intensified efforts. He also expressed pride in Uganda’s advancement in producing its own malaria rapid diagnostic test kits, reducing reliance on imports and bolstering local capabilities.

This initiative underscores a proactive approach to public health within schools, aiming to create safer environments for students. The commitment to strengthening healthcare infrastructure and localized solutions marks a significant step in Uganda’s ongoing battle against malaria.
