As South Sudan approaches a pivotal moment in its history with the country’s first general elections slated for December 22, 2026, political figures are reaching out to Uganda for continued support. The South Sudan National Elections Commission has initiated a nationwide civic and voter education campaign, a significant stride towards constitutional democracy.
Isaac Moro Genesio, Chairperson of the South Sudan National Movement for Change (SSNMC), expressed optimism about the electoral preparations, emphasizing that peace is paramount for credible elections. He specifically called upon Uganda, a long-standing regional partner, to share its extensive experience in democratic processes and peace-building.
“Uganda has a history of democracy that was built on a strong foundation,” Genesio remarked to Nile Post. “South Sudan can learn from Uganda’s experience and receive advice on the dangers and challenges that come with democratic processes.”
Despite prevailing economic challenges, including a depreciating currency and rising living costs, South Sudan remains committed to holding peaceful and credible elections. Charles Mogga Guya, SSNMC Secretary for Foreign Affairs, suggested that adopting the Ugandan currency in local markets could help stabilize the economy and ease trade within the region.
Uganda’s support is seen as vital not only for South Sudan’s democratic transition but also for broader regional stability. Hajjat Medina Nahum Ojale, NRM Director of Finance, stressed that peace in South Sudan directly impacts Uganda’s economic and regional interests, fostering trade and growth.
Political analysts suggest Uganda can offer diplomatic and technical assistance, but ultimately, the responsibility for ensuring peaceful and credible elections rests with South Sudanese citizens and their leadership. Success in these polls would mark a historic achievement for the young nation, offering its citizens a chance to shape their future after years of instability.
