Police Issue Stern Warning Against Violence Ahead of LC1 Polls

As Uganda gears up for the Local Council One (LC1) elections on Tuesday, the Uganda Police Force has announced a zero-tolerance policy towards any acts of violence or disruption. Police spokesperson, Kituuma Rusoke, addressed journalists on Monday, emphasizing that all campaign activities must cease today, in line with the Electoral Commission’s schedule. On polling day, no campaigning or public processions will be permitted.

Rusoke urged the public and all participants to maintain peace and order, stating that security agencies were largely satisfied with the conduct of the recent Women’s Council elections, noting only isolated incidents. However, he made it clear that intimidation of voters, threats against candidates, interference with the voting process, or attempts to manipulate results will not be tolerated.

“We shall respond to the extent of the threat you pose” Rusoke declared, particularly warning against candidates who might try to disrupt the process if they perceive a lack of support. The police are prepared to counter any illegal actions that undermine the integrity of the elections.

Furthermore, the police spokesperson highlighted that losers are expected to utilize legal channels to address any grievances, rather than resorting to violence. “There is no excuse for resorting to raw violence, but if you choose to do so, know there will be countermeasures to bring you to order,” he stated.

The upcoming LC1 elections will elect chairpersons and village committee members, the most grassroots level of local government. Voters will participate using the public lining-up method behind their chosen candidate or their representative. These elections are a crucial part of Uganda’s decentralized governance system.
