NUP's Entry into IPOD Nears Final Approval

The National Unity Platform (NUP) is nearing the final stages of admission into the Inter-Party Organisation for Dialogue (IPOD), a platform designed for political party discussions. IPOD’s Executive Director, Dr. Lawrence Sserwambala, indicated that the party has successfully navigated the administrative hurdles and is set to be formally welcomed.

Dr. Sserwambala addressed speculation that NUP’s interest in IPOD is solely driven by the prospect of accessing government funding. While acknowledging the financial incentive, he suggested that NUP’s recent communications point towards a genuine desire to engage in political dialogue and pursue electoral reforms.

The IPOD platform, established in 2010, has seen its significance grow, particularly after amendments to the Political Parties and Organisations Act linked participation to eligibility for government funding. NUP had previously declined an invitation to join IPOD after the 2021 General Election, citing concerns over governance issues.

However, the party later expressed renewed interest. Initial communication faced a hurdle when the IPOD Council of Secretary Generals found the wording unclear, requesting further clarification. Delays were also attributed to the election period, which occupied the schedules of many IPOD summit members.

“The process of adding a new party into IPOD isn’t a one off. There are a series of meetings that take place. Right now we are heading to the pinnacle of that process to admit NUP and ANT,” Dr. Sserwambala stated, referring to the Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) also being in the final stages of admission.

Upon formal approval by the IPOD Summit, NUP will become a full member, enabling it to access public funds alongside other parliamentary parties and participate in the ongoing dialogue on crucial governance matters. IPOD currently comprises parties such as NRM, DP, UPC, FDC, and JEEMA.

This development follows NUP’s prior unsuccessful legal challenge against the funding mechanism linked to IPOD membership.
