Nansana Security Vows Zero Tolerance for Election Violence

As Uganda heads towards the Local Council I (LC1) chairperson elections across the nation, security authorities in Nansana Municipality are taking a proactive stance to avert potential unrest. Officials have strongly cautioned both candidates vying for leadership positions and the electorate against engaging in any violent activities that could disrupt the polls, scheduled for Tuesday.

The firm directive came during a crucial security meeting held at the Nabweru Division headquarters. Aspiring village chairpersons from across Nansana convened with security leaders to deliberate on strategies for maintaining peace and order throughout the electoral period.

Nansana Resident District Commissioner Charles Lwanga emphasized that security agencies will not tolerate disruptions. “We shall not allow any form of chaos that can interfere with the peaceful election of village leaders,” Lwanga stated, underscoring the commitment to a tranquil process.

Lwanga highlighted the importance of candidates actively engaging their supporters, particularly the youth, to discourage any provocations at polling stations. “They should talk to them and warn them against bringing violence to polling stations,” he urged, placing responsibility on candidates to manage their followers.

Furthermore, candidates were reminded that only the Electoral Commission possesses the legal authority to declare election results. Any premature announcements by individuals, including security personnel, are strictly forbidden.

Police officer Asimwe Mutera and Nabweru Division Mayor Robert Masereka echoed these sentiments, encouraging candidates to accept the election outcomes gracefully and to prioritize community service over conflict. “Wait for another opportunity instead of creating problems,” Mutera advised.

A candidate, Sinani Kakembo, appealed for impartiality from security forces, requesting equal protection for all participants regardless of their political affiliation.

Candidate attendance at the meeting reportedly boosted their confidence, with assurances from security officials that all contestants would be safeguarded against intimidation. The officials were urged to maintain vigilance to prevent any attempts to derail the elections.

Electoral officials also reminded eligible voters that their participation is crucial and encouraged them to exercise their democratic rights without fear, provided their names are on the village voters’ register.
