President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has thrown his support behind the ambitious Nonda Coffee Park project, slated for development in Nakaseke District. This significant agro-industrial venture is poised to revolutionize Uganda’s coffee industry by focusing on value addition, generating employment, and broadening international market access.

The President’s commitment was solidified during a meeting at State House, Entebbe, with Mr. Tonny Miiro Kibuuka, CEO of Nonda Coffee Park. Mr. Kibuuka updated the President on the project’s progress and sought further government assistance ahead of the planned groundbreaking ceremony in October.

Situated on a 100-acre site in Butalangu Town Council, Nakaseke District, the Nonda Coffee Park is projected to become the largest single coffee processing facility in East and Central Africa. Its operations will encompass processing 42,000 metric tons of coffee annually, sourcing beans from central Uganda and other coffee-growing regions.

This project is a key component of the Great Uganda-Saudi Coffee Corridor, under the Value-at-Source Coffee Project. This initiative prioritizes keeping more of the coffee value chain within Uganda, moving away from the traditional export of largely unprocessed beans.

“The President has committed his support to this project, particularly in mobilizing coffee farming households to prepare for the increased demand for coffee that will be required by the factory,” stated Mr. Miiro following the meeting.

The estimated investment for the Nonda Coffee Park stands at USD200 million. Approximately USD160 million will be directed towards the park’s infrastructure on the 100-acre site. The Ugandan government is expected to contribute USD44 million, with the remainder financed by private investors from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

A significant advantage for the Nonda Coffee Park is its pre-existing export market in Saudi Arabia. Mr. Miiro noted that the processed coffee is already slated for offtake under a commercial arrangement, bolstered by the company’s ownership of Ugandan-branded coffee shops in the Middle East.

The facility is anticipated to generate over USD800 million in annual revenues, substantially boosting Uganda’s foreign exchange from coffee exports. With preparatory works already underway, the project is expected to be completed within the next 24 months.
