Hoima Schools Encouraged to Adopt Scouting and Girl Guides for Patriotism

Educational institutions in Hoima District are being strongly encouraged to embrace scouting and Girl Guides programs. Officials believe these activities are vital tools for instilling patriotism, discipline, and a sense of responsible citizenship in young learners.

Ssonko Bongole, the Assistant Resident District Commissioner (RDC) for Hoima, emphasized that these programs play a pivotal role in shaping character. He highlighted how scouting and Girl Guides cultivate essential values such as discipline, teamwork, patriotism, and leadership skills, urging schools to incorporate them into their regular activities.

Beatrice Wembabazi, Hoima District Woman MP, also present at a recent closing ceremony for these activities, added that such programs should equip learners with skills to combat corruption, foster creativity, and develop essential survival competencies. She pledged to advocate for greater financial support for these initiatives across the district.

Stephen Mwesigwa Rwamukaga, representing the Chief Administrative Officer, encouraged schools to view extracurricular activities like scouting and Girl Guides as excellent avenues for identifying, developing, and mentoring student talents.

The event also saw competitions where St. Tito Winyi Secondary School excelled in both Girl Guides and Scouts categories, while Kyaporoni Primary School secured first place at the primary level. A total of 18 schools participated across both programs.

Despite the positive outcomes reported by Harriet Asiimwe, the Hoima District Inspector of Schools and focal person for these groups, she noted that inadequate funding remains a significant challenge. She appealed to stakeholders for increased support to bolster the programs and extend their reach.

Julius Baitwa Godolo, LCIII Chairperson of Kigorobya Town Council, affirmed leaders’ commitment to promoting scouting and patriotism from an early age, aiming to cultivate responsible citizens from childhood. This collective push aims to harness the power of scouting and Girl Guides for a more patriotic and well-rounded future generation.
