Court of Appeal Tackles 34 Cases in Special Civil Session

The Court of Appeal has commenced a special three-day civil session in Kampala, a strategic move to expedite the resolution of numerous cases and improve access to justice for Ugandans.

The session, which began on Monday, July 27, is scheduled to conclude on Thursday, July 30. Any matters initially slated for Tuesday have been rescheduled to Friday, July 31, due to the observance of a public holiday.

A distinguished panel, comprising Lady Justice Irene Mulyagonja, Justice Mike Musisi, and Lady Justice Esta Nambayo, is presiding over the proceedings. This panel will adjudicate a diverse array of civil disputes.

According to the cause list released by Deputy Registrar Janeva Natukunda, the court’s agenda includes a wide spectrum of legal matters. These range from land disputes, claims for damages, and divorce proceedings to cases involving breach of contract, compensation claims, unlawful publications, taxation issues, and defamation.

A particularly high-profile case on the docket is an election petition appeal. Elias Luyimbazi Nalukoola, the incumbent Member of Parliament for Kawempe North, is challenging a High Court decision that previously nullified his election following a by-election.

This extended session underscores the judiciary’s commitment to clearing case backlogs and ensuring that all parties have timely access to legal recourse. Appellants and their legal counsel were present as the proceedings got underway, signaling a renewed push towards judicial efficiency.
