Bugisu Leaders Laud Presidential Skilling Hubs, Advocate for More Funding

Leaders in the Bugisu region have expressed strong approval for the Presidential Industrial Skilling Hubs, citing their significant role in improving the lives of vulnerable young people. The initiative is credited with providing essential vocational training, supporting entrepreneurial ventures, and driving wealth creation.

During a stakeholder meeting at the Bugisu Zonal Presidential Industrial Skilling Hub in Mbale District, officials highlighted how the program has equipped thousands of youth with practical, job-ready skills. This has, in turn, contributed to a reduction in idleness and crime, while opening avenues for self-employment through access to SACCO financing.

The Bugisu Zonal Hub Chairperson, Mahmood Masaba Mutenyo, emphasized that the program extends beyond mere skill acquisition, fostering discipline, responsibility, and a strong work ethic among participants. He noted that this approach is vital in shaping a generation capable of contributing meaningfully to national development. While appreciating the timely delivery of training materials from State House, Masaba raised concerns about political interference in the selection of beneficiaries, urging adherence to the established fair selection process.

Geoffrey Wokuri, MP for Bungokho South, described the hubs as a critical engine for Uganda’s socio-economic progress and called for an expansion of training slots to accommodate the growing demand. Similarly, Namisindwa District Chairperson Emma Bwayo advocated for direct parliamentary budgetary support for the hubs, reflecting on the observed decrease in youth idleness and crime due to the program’s success.

Eng. Raymond Kamugisha from State House urged leaders to respect the transparent selection committees and to support graduates by facilitating access to local government contracts and SACCO financing. He also encouraged graduates to be proactive in marketing their skills and focusing on quality service delivery to ensure business growth.

Looking ahead, new courses such as electrical installation, plumbing, and automobile mechanics are set to be introduced, with trainees also expected to participate in constructing new infrastructure. Recent disbursements of SACCO funds to graduates across Bugisu districts underscore the program’s tangible impact on poverty reduction and business establishment.
