134 Kamwenge LC I Candidates Secure Unopposed Wins Ahead of Polls

With the Local Council I (LC I) elections on the horizon, Kamwenge District is set to see a significant number of uncontested victories. The Electoral Commission has announced that 134 candidates have been declared unopposed across the district’s 442 villages.

George William Magezi, the Kamwenge District Returning Officer, stated that the nominations, which have now closed, saw a strong showing from both the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) and independent candidates. This indicates a diverse range of participation in the grassroots electoral process.

“Out of the 442 villages in Kamwenge District, a total of 134 LC I chairperson candidates have been declared unopposed following the conclusion of nominations,” Magezi confirmed. He added that three more candidates are in the process of withdrawing, which could potentially increase the number of unopposed winners before voting commences.

Magezi assured the public that the Electoral Commission is fully prepared for the elections. All necessary polling materials have been distributed to polling stations, and officials are ready to carry out their duties in what is described as a foundational democratic exercise for Uganda.

He urged all participants, including candidates and voters, to adhere to electoral laws and maintain peace throughout the process. “I urge all candidates and voters to conduct themselves peacefully, respect the electoral guidelines, and allow the democratic process to take its course without intimidation or violence,” Magezi emphasized.

The LC I elections are a crucial component of Uganda’s local governance, empowering village leaders to play a vital role in community development, conflict resolution, and the implementation of national programs at the most local level. The elections are set to take place on Tuesday, July 28, 2026.
